Künefe from the Turkish city of Antakya in Hatay Province has received a so-called protected designation of origin from the European Union.
Hatayer-style künefe is one of “the few sweet dishes that contain cheese,” the EU Commission said in a statement. The specialty is made in the city of Antakya, with the recipe “passed down from one generation to the next based on a master-apprentice relationship.”
The dessert is made from a lightly baked stringy dough, fresh Antakya cheese, and butter and syrup.
